Pat Mascia, Managing Director

Pat joined UMFREA in September, 2020. He and the UMFREA team are responsible for managing, leasing, and developing UMFREA’s residential and commercial real estate portfolio. Pat's career started in 1991 as an Associate Lawyer in the Real Estate Section of the Briggs and Morgan law firm (now Taft, Stettinius & Hollister). In 1997, Pat moved to Opus U.S. Corporation as Associate General Counsel and then, in 1998, was named Vice President of Dispositions, Finance and Investments for Opus Properties, LLC. Pat returned to Briggs and Morgan as a partner in 2014, becoming the leader of Briggs’ Real Estate Section. After nearly 7 years there, he moved into his current position with UMFREA. An active volunteer in the real estate industry and in the community, Pat is a past President of NAIOP Minnesota and past Chair of the Minnesota Chapter of the Urban Land Institute. He has also served as President of the Neighborhood House Association in St. Paul and of Creighton University’s National Alumni Board. Pat has served as a member of the boards of Discover St. Louis Park, the Twin West Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Frogtown Community Development Corporation in St. Paul. He currently serves on the boards of University Enterprise Laboratories, Towerside Innovation District, and is a member of ULI Minnesota’s Governance Committee, Market Council and DEI Task Force.

 

Renee Spillum, Director of Real Estate Development

Renee is a real estate developer and broker who has spent her career focused on community-led development projects and affordable housing. In her role at UMFREA, which began in August 2021, she leads land development activities and implementation of the public realm and activated ground floor vision of The MIX, as well as working closely with Pat on all aspects of the redevelopment project. Previously, she led commercial, industrial and multifamily projects at Seward Redesign, a Minneapolis neighborhood based community real estate developer. Renee holds a Master of Public Policy degree from the Humphrey School with a focus in Housing and Community Development. She is the Chair of the Board of Directors at the Creative Enterprise Zone, and lives with her family in the Midway neighborhood of St. Paul.
